Which number to call in Vietnam
Our source lists no single general number for Vietnam, so save all three under names you will find fast. The three run in a row, 113, 114 and 115, which makes them easy to remember.
- Someone is hurt or seriously ill: ambulance 115. A traffic accident, a fall, heat stroke, a drink that has made someone collapse.
- You are in danger, a crime is happening or you are in a dispute: police 113. The Government of Canada's advice for Vietnam says to contact the police as soon as possible if you are involved in a dispute.
- Fire: 114.
Tourist police: we have not found an official national tourist police hotline for Vietnam that we could verify, so we do not list one. Call the police on 113.
Saigon, Hanoi, Da Nang: the same numbers
Vietnam's emergency numbers are national. Police 113, fire 114 and ambulance 115 are the numbers in Ho Chi Minh City (still widely called Saigon), Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Hue and Sapa.
What to say when you call
- The emergency, in one line: "a man was hit by a motorbike", "my phone was snatched", "there is a fire in my hotel".
- Where you are: the street, the district (District 1, the Old Quarter) and the name of your hotel or hostel. Keep its address in Vietnamese, with the accents, in your phone so you can read it out or show it.
- How to reach you: your phone number, and keep the phone on.
If language gets in the way, ask your hotel reception or someone nearby to speak for you.
After the call: hospitals, reports and your embassy
The Government of Canada says medical care is generally better in major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, remains limited in smaller cities and remote areas, and that private facilities are usually better equipped than public ones. Public and private hospitals may require payment before treatment, and services can be expensive, so buy insurance that covers hospital stays and medical evacuation.
After a sexual assault, Canada's advice is to contact the local police and make sure they file a report. Keep digital copies of your passport and visa, and for anything serious contact your embassy or consulate.
Send these numbers to your people if you miss a check-in
Arm it is the free check-in in the HelloMates app. Before a night out, a late ride or a day trip, set a check-in hour on Hanoi's or Saigon's clock and tick the people at home who should hear from you. Check in on time and nothing is sent. Miss it, and they get a prepared message with your last known location and these same Vietnam numbers, read from the same tables as this page.
Arm it does not contact the police, an ambulance or any emergency service, and it sends nobody to you. It delivers your message to the people you chose. If you are in danger, call the number above yourself. See how Arm it works.
